Postmodernism, maintaining functional and structural foundations of the building, imposes contradictory scenery taken from any architectural style. Postmodernism is characterized not only by the use of certain parts of historical styles, but also whole systems: construction equipment, principles of composition (Jencks 65). Thus, the functional problems are overshadowed and dominated by the aesthetic principle that is not predetermined by admiration, but rather by tension and irony.
This style accommodates pop art, op art, kinetic art, conceptual art, happening, minimalism, ready-made, etc. In some buildings, the architects of postmodernism inserted fluted columns of various styles, accompanied by stucco figurines, which was extremely unusual for modernism. Postmodernism is in constant search. Its experimentation resembles the twenties of the last century (Jencks 112). Its creation is enveloped in a new style of game form, blurring the border between the elite and mass.
In its principle antiutopian attitude postmodernism rejects the substitution of art by philosophy, religion or politics (without giving up, however, by various kinds of artistic rapid analysis of all these spheres of culture). Restoring the purity and creativity of autonomy entails strengthening its independent, in its own sense "post-ideological" (i.e. free) social sensitivity (Jencks 83).
Postmodern theory refers to the broad and somehow ambiguous sets of belief systems that have deeper connections with the cultural precepts, philosophical reaction to modernism and its convictions. Therefore, postmodern theory is an anchor upon which reactionary principles of postmodern practices are embedded; inclusive of arts and architecture (Woods 89). Besides, the realms of postmodernism are critically captured by the core philosophical precept of this theory, and it clearly reiterates that reality has no ultimate accessibility by the human investigation, but instead views reality as what social groups of individuals make it happen. Therefore, the scholarly debates surrounding postmodern architecture is well articulated by the postmodern theory.
